The Challenge
A hard kombucha manufacturing facility in Chula Vista, California, needed to reduce operational costs in its highly energy-consumptive production environment. The facility faced high energy demands, especially during peak hours, leading to elevated electricity expenses and demand charges. Managing energy needs with a grid-dependent setup limited potential cost savings. They required a flexible energy storage solution with intelligent control software to dynamically manage energy dispatch, reduce peak demand charges, and enhance the use of renewable energy—all without disrupting production.
The Solution
Energy Toolbase and HES Solar collaborated to deploy ETB Controller with Acumen AI, utilizing a dynamic economic dispatch controls strategy. The project features a 4163 kW DC photovoltaic array paired with a 60kW/258kWh BYD CHESS battery, which is customized to align with the facility’s specific load profile. Through Acumen AI’s dynamic economic dispatch, the system autonomously shifts the facility’s energy use to off-peak periods, dispatching stored energy during high-demand intervals to minimize costs. By strategically reducing grid dependency during high-cost intervals, the facility benefits from demand charge reductions, increased renewable energy utilization, and long-term operational savings. As the Performance Data Provider (PDP) under California’s SGIP Program, Energy Toolbase monitors and reports system performance to ensure compliance and optimize cost savings. This is HES Solar’s third energy storage system deployed with ETB Controller.
